Fast Track Management Development Program

First line managers have been said to have the most difficult job in the organization. The transition to the role of manager is often stressful and complex. Often there are few resources available to ease the transition and provide the knowledge and skills necessary to instill confidence. The Fast Track Management Development Program consists of 10 3-hour modules covering important knowledge and skills required by effective managers. (more)

This program is highly interactive and includes hands-on activities such as short cases, group exercises, and role plays.

    • Manage workers more effectively by understanding the functions of management and the roles of a supervisor.
    • Recognize the need to balance the roles and functions in order to successfully achieve individual and organizational goals.

  2. Communicating Effectively
    • Communicate more effectively with subordinates and superiors by identifying and removing common barriers.
    • Identify the appropriate forms of communication for different messages.
    • Improve your listening skills.

  3. Decision Making and Managing Your Time
    • Understand the elements of effective individual decision making.
    • Apply techniques for involving subordinates in decision making when appropriate.
    • Improve your effectiveness with proven time management methods.

  4. Effective Leadership
    • Understand the principles of effective leadership, and identify your style of leadership.
    • Recognize the need for flexibility when leading workers and the consequences of failing to change your style.

  5. Recruiting and Training New Workers
    • Become familiar with various recruiting and screening programs and learn how to avoid common problems associated with them.
    • Understand the need for socialization and training when new workers are hired.
    • Recognize several principles of effective training and understand the concept of the training cycle.

  6. Motivating and Appraising Employees
    • Understand the underlying principles of getting work done through subordinates.
    • Identify and remove job elements that de-motivate workers.
    • Recognize appropriate standards for appraising employees and eliminate common pitfalls in the process.

  7. Disciplining and Terminating Employees and Handling Conflict
    • Recognize the elements of a fair disciplinary system.
    • Know when to use positive or negative forms of discipline.
    • Handle conflict more effectively with your subordinates and between departments with the aid of a helpful model.

  8. Dealing with Organizational Politics
    • Understand the importance of influencing subordinates and superiors.
    • Identify techniques for effective influence.
    • Recognize political games that interfere with effectively achieving individual and organizational goals.

  9. Managing Change
    • Recognize the need for involving workers when changes are made.
    • Utilize techniques for managing resistance to change.
    • Make change more effective with a useful 3-phase model.

  10. HR Laws and Diversity
    • Become familiar with recent federal and state laws that affect the supervisor's role.
    • Understand the consequences to the organization if laws are ignored.
    • Recognize the value of workplace diversity as well as the challenges to achieving it.
