NSU Women’s Tennis Team Opens Fall Season with Strong Performance at Division II ITA Southeast Regional

The Nova Southeastern University women's tennis team opened its fall season with a strong showing at the Division II Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Championships this weekend in Ft. Myers, Fla.

NSU freshman Ulia Talalenko ( Naples, Fla.) was a semifinalist in her first career event, while fellow freshman Alexandra Korotkevich ( St. Petersburg, Russia) advanced to the round of 16. Anna Schmidtmann ( Jr., Hamburg, Germany), Andrea Moncada (Jr., Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Katherine DeVera (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) each won first round matches, but were unable to advance any further in the event.

Talalenko defeated the sixth and fourth seeds in the event before falling to fifth-seeded Vici Weltz of Lynn University in the semifinals. Weltz then knocked off Barry's Greta Trotman to win the singles title. Korotkevich's tournament came to an end when she fell to seventh-seeded Dragana Ilic of Lynn after she won her first two matches.

In doubles play, Moncada and DeVera won their first match, but fell in the second round to the Barry duo of Ildiko Csordas and Ana Maria Zueltas who eventually went on to win the doubles title.

Korotkevich also teamed with Jessica Homerlein (Sr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) to win a first round match, but the duo was edged 8-6 in the second round.

NSU will hit the court again October 7-9 at the C.L. Varner Invitational hosted by Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.
