Trio Of Nova Southeastern University Teams Selected To Participate In NCAA Regional Tournaments
Women’s Golf Makes Third Straight Appearance, While Men’s Golf and Women’s Tennis Selected for First-Time Ever
Three Nova Southeastern University spring sports teams have been selected to participate in the NCAA tournament in their respective sports. The NSU men’s and women’s golf teams were joined this week by the women’s tennis team in each sports’ regional competition.
Women’s Golf
The No. 8 women’s golf team will be making its third straight appearance in the NCAA South Regional, which will be hosted by Florida Southern College at the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla. on Monday and Tuesday, May 2-3. The 54-hole event will consist of 36 holes played on Monday and an 18-hole final round on Tuesday.
Each regional will consist of both teams and
individual competition conducted concurrently. All participants
will compete throughout the 54 holes of competition. The top two
teams along with the top two individuals not with a team from each
regional, will advance to the championships. The 2005 NCAA Division
II Women's Golf Championships will be held May 11-14, at The Championships
Course at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico,
and will be hosted by Western New Mexico University.
Men’s Golf
NSU's 24th ranked men's golf team will travel to Valdosta, Ga. for the NCAA Division II South/South Central Super Regional next week. The 54-hole event will be played at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club May 2-4, 2005. NSU is one of eight teams in the field for the Super Regional, which is being hosted by Valdosta State University. NSU will be making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA South/South Central Super Regional after having individuals qualify for the event in each of the last two years.
The top team from each region within the Super
Regional and the top individual not with a team from each Super
Regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May
17-20 at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga. The finals
will be hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University.
10 additional teams will earn berths to the
men’s golf finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional at the finals. For the 2005 championships, the additional super regional allotments are as follows: Atlantic/Southeast – Three, South/South Central – Three, West/Northwest - Four
Both the men’s Super Regional and the women’s Regional events will be featured on GolfStat’s live scoring system. Live hole-by-hole scoring can be followed online at http://www.golfstatresults.com
Women’s Tennis
The No. 23 NSU women’s tennis team, which finished fifth in the recently played SSC Championships, was selected to the NCAA Southeast Regional co-hosted by Barry University and Lynn University. The Lady Knights will face No. 10 Rollins College at Lynn on Thursday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. The winner of that match will move on to a second round match against the winner of the Lynn-Tusculum match on Friday, May 6 at 3:30 p.m.
NSU will be making its first-ever appearance
in the NCAA Championships in just its second year of competition
in NCAA Division II. The Lady Knights, under head coach Michael
Coleman, turned around a 1-16 record a season ago to post a 14-11
record in 2005.
The 16 first- and second-round tournaments
will be conducted May 5-7, with the winner of each first- and second-round
tournament advancing to the finals in Altamonte Springs, Fla.,
with the Central Florida Sports Commission and SSC serving as co-hosts,
May 11-14.
