University School Alumnus, Author of Best Selling Book
Mr. Pearl is the noted author of many published books and papers,
including The Dante Club, published by Random House in
2003.
The Dante Club was ranked as a New York Times Bestseller,
a #1 Boston Globe Bestseller, was one of Neilsen’s
top 100 bestselling books of 2004, and has been nominated for awards
around the world, including Harvard University’s “Certificate
of Distinction in Teaching” for “Dante’s Divine
Comedy and its World,” in 2001 and 2003 and for “Fairy
Tales and the Culture of Childhood,” in 2002. The Dante
Club was also honored as one of 2003’s “25 Books
to Remember” by the New York Public Library and was voted
one of the Best Books of 2003 by US News & World Report.
A graduate of Yale Law School and a Summa
Cum Laude graduate from Harvard University, Mr. Pearl first became
excited about reading and literature while attending the English
classes of teachers Robert Parson and Linda Winrow at the University
School. His second grade teacher from University School was one
of the first to recognize Mr. Pearl’s talents for creative
story telling.
He has conducted numerous speaking tours about the novel and writing
in general in more than 40 cities and five foreign countries. His
new novel, The Poe Shadow, is expected in 2005.
Matthew Pearl is this year’s distinguished
alumni award winner for the University School.
