SHSS to Present Workshop on Diversity Conversations- Friday, May 20, 2005
With the increase in people of color in the United States and
the tremendous multicultural community in South Florida, MFT trainees
and professionals are poised to co-create a unified community.
On Friday, May 20, 2005 the Graduate School of Humanities and Social
Sciences (SHSS) is sponsoring a workshop entitled “Diversity
Conversations: Creating a Redemptive Atmosphere”.
This workshop will illustrate how to create an environment to
address difficult topics associated with “isms” plus
offer ways to recreate similar communities. Presenters will also
demonstrate how open dialog and risk-taking can create accepting,
non-violent and collaborative societies. Presenters will show how
creating a safe atmosphere of acceptance and openness when discussing
diversity issues can stimulate enriching, redemptive (i.e., therapeutic)
conversations and outcomes. Participants will not only be challenged,
but also motivated to move beyond political correctness to actively
and willingly engaging in conversations about difference. During
this workshop participants will increase their ability to acknowledge,
accept and challenge their own biases, increase their ability to
be redemptive in diversity conversations, and increase their ability
to accept—not tolerate— “Others”.
The workshop will take place NSU’s East Campus Alumni Hall
Auditorium located at 3100 SW 9th Ave. in Ft. Lauderdale from 8:30
a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Workshop fees are:
- Professional $100
- Student $50
- SHSS Student $10
- Corporate Group $80 (5 or more professional registrants
will receive a 20% discount)
NOTE: This workshop is approved for continuing education for
mental health and psychology providers. The workshop will provide
7 hours of Continuing Education.
