NSU Converts to Five-Digit Phone Number Extensions
To keep up with Nova Southeastern University’s tremendous growth, we are converting our phone number system to allow for the creation of 2,000 new university phone numbers. This expansion will require a conversion from the current four-digit extensions to five-digit extensions. This will affect only internal dialing (phone calls from one on-campus phone line to another on-campus extension) and any calls made to NSU’s 800 numbers with extensions.
Beginning June 7, 2008, all internal phone calls will need to include the number “2” before the current four-digit extension. For example, ext. 1234 will become ext. 21234. This new five-digit number will be the new extension.
All calls made to any university 800 number that requests an extension will also need to include the number “2” before the current four-digit extension. For example, 800-541-6682, ext. 1234 will become 800-541-6682, ext. 21234.
This will NOT affect direct-dial calls made to the university from off-campus phone lines. For example, the number (954) 262-1234, when dialed from any off-campus phone, will not change.
For more details, see “Important Information” below. If you need additional information regarding your extension, call Telephone Services at (954) 262-2789 or (954) 262-2706.
Important Information
What is happening?
- Internal phone calls, those made from one on-campus phone line to another on-campus extension, will need to add the number “2” to the beginning of the old four-digit extension. For example, extension 1234 will become ext. 21234, when dialed on campus.
- 800-number phone calls made to any NSU 800 number that requests an extension (from both on-campus and off-campus phone lines) will also need to include the number “2” before the extension. For example, 800-262-0000, ext. 1234 will become 800-262-0000, ext. 21234.
- Direct-dial external phone calls, those made to any university extension from any off-campus phone line, will remain the same. For example, the number (954) 262-1234, when dialed from any off-campus phone, will not change.
Why is this happening?
Originally, NSU obtained 10,000 phone numbers in the exchange (954) 262-XXXX. At the university’s current growth rate, NSU will run out of telephone extensions in late 2008. Adding an extra digit (the number “2”) to all university extensions will provide NSU with an additional 2,000 phone numbers. Beyond adding more capacity, conversion to five-digit dialing will provide enhanced communication options during emergencies and will allow direct connection with the SECs via VOIP (Voice over IP).
Who will this affect?
This will affect all phone number extensions at the following NSU locations: Main Campus, East Campus, Griffin Road location, Oceanographic Center, North Miami Beach Campus, Kendall Student Educational Center, and West Palm Beach Student Educational Center. It will also affect any callers dialing NSU’s 800 numbers with extensions.
When is this going to happen?
The early morning of Saturday, June 7, 2008, after 2:00 a.m., is the target date to change the campus dialing plan from four to five-digit extensions. All phone numbers and AUDIX voicemail boxes will be changed with a minimal interruption in service.
How long will the conversion take?
There will be a short interruption of telephone service as the switch is made from four- to five-digit dialing. It will be done in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 7 to lessen the impact of the brief outage (approximately 30 minutes).
Freeze Period on Phone Number Changes
A “freeze” on changes to extensions is in effect Friday, May 23 through Sunday, June 8, 2008. If you need to change your phone number extension due to a change in your office location, or any other acceptable reason, this change will be made once the conversion to five-digit dialing is complete.
Will the AutoAttendant (recorded greetings and coverage) change?
AutoAttendants, which answer incoming calls to the university’s call center and certain departments, will instruct internal callers and those dialing university 800 numbers that request extensions to use the new five-digit extensions. These callers will be instructed to add the number “2” to the beginning of the old four-digit extension. Once the conversion has taken place, all internal calls and those to the university’s 800 numbers with extensions will require the full five-digit extensions to be successful.
What about my university voicemail (AUDIX)?
All AUDIX voicemail boxes will be renumbered from the current four-digit extensions to the new five-digit ones. Remember to update your outgoing voicemail messages. For example, if your "out of office" message directs callers to dial another extension for assistance, ensure you update this message to include the new five-digit extension.
How will I call an outside line from on campus?
There is no change to make calls from on-campus phone lines to non-university phone numbers. Please continue to dial “9” to access an outside line from an on-campus phone.
Auto-Dialing, Call Forwarding, and Speed Dialing
Internal autodial and call forward values on your university phone will automatically be reset. Speed dialing lists will not need to be changed. However, you may need to update your phone's speed-dialing faceplate label to include the number "2" before the old four-digit extensions. New phone label printable templates are available for download here.
Emergency Calls (9-1-1)
There will be no change when placing an emergency call from a campus phone line. The number to dial is still “9,” to reach an outside line, then 9-1-1.
Fax machines, alarms, debit machines, and modems
Any device connected to a university analog extension line that places outgoing telephone calls to off-campus lines will not need to be reprogrammed. However, when dialing internally using these devices, the new five digit-extensions will be required. For example, fax extension 1234 will become fax extension 21234.
How will this affect printed materials including my phone number?
After June 7, any place your old four-digit extension is listed will need to be updated to include your new five-digit extension. This includes brochures, printed directories, Web sites, email signatures, letterheads, and business cards. In accordance with the conversion, NSU’s Office of Publications will change all phone numbers (from four digits to five digits) included on new printed materials processed in the office. For more information on updating your printed materials, contact the Office of Publications at (954) 262-8850 or, if calling internally after June 7, dial ext. 28850.
Campus Directories
The online personnel and departmental directories will show the new five-digit extension numbers.
